What’s a QR code?  It’s those square boxes that look like a crossword puzzle on steroids.  Been noticing QR (quick response) codes everywhere you go?   Shareology was on her way to MIMA this week when she spotted this apartment building sign:

So lately, besides in-store information, I’ve seen QR codes in magazines, newspapers, and my personal fav, on business cards.  I use Barcode Scanner and TagReader as QR code readers on my Droid X and am now decoding messages left and right.   I asked Lisa Foote (@FooteNotes) for her favorite QR code resources:

Interesting article on performance of a Boots QR campaign in UK:

Astounding 4,500% growth in QR code scanning, first quarter 2011:

Article citing these stats w/ additional quotes:

Hope that helps! I’m sure you saw the Pioneer Press article today on QR as well. happy blogging! – Lisa

Thanks, Lisa!!   Well, there it is!!  More than you could possibly want on QR codes!!!  Thanks to Lisa and Julio Ojeda-Zapata at the Pioneer Press for superb resources!!

Where will YOU see your next QR code?

Update July 19, 2011:  USATODAY published a piece on QR codes today which spotted a QR Code on a tombstone in Seattle.  Yep, a tombstone.  Small, quite tasteful, and leading to pictures and a life story of the deceased.

Which Twin Cities shopping center is This? Part Deux… April 3, 2011

One of the things that kept Shareology alive during the Winter of Discontent was the strolling between windows of one of the best merchandised shopping centers in the Twin Cities.   Rhoda Morgenstern would have died to have created these beautiful windows:

blue and white sky: 6 inch wide division

blue and white sky: 6 feet wide division

sweet dreams are made of this window....

oooopppps, I'm dripping pure gold......

OK, so which Twin Cities shopping center is this????

Shareology used to spend a tad more time on the West Bank of Minneapolis than she does now; thus the Metro IBA meeting at Midwest Mountaineering was a great chance to visit this outdoor retailer that won 2010 Retailer of the Year presented by Backpacker Magazine:

check out the tin ceiling!!!

3D Merchandising: using ALL the space, including the ceiling!!

Loooooove these colors!!!

which came 1st? Minnesota explorers or Midwest Mountaineering??

Hard to believe this local retailer in Minneapolis St. Paul has been exploring customer satisfaction  for 40 years!!  Shareology especially loved how easy parking is…

It’s easy — Park in the surface level parking lot (not the ramp) right behind our store!  Our friendly employees will validate your ticket (weekdays before 6pm 2 hours max., weekdays after 6pm and weekends 4 hours max.) — No purchase required!

Apple brings their Briefing Room to Uptown! July 4, 2010

Shareology was in a nostalgic mood this holiday weekend; she journeyed to Uptown Minneapolis, where she had lived for 17 years across from the Uptown Theater.   My, oh, my: the changes!  Of course, she remembered MAC, but now Victoria’s Secret and NorthFace add retail zing to Hennepin Avenue.  But the biggest retail zing on Hennepin is definitely the new Apple store.

Shareology admired the outside and then ventured inside:

Shareology understands that Apple strongly prefers she not take photos inside the Apple stores….still…..can’t hurt to ask politely one more time.   Well, dear Shareology readers, she didn’t get photo permission, but she did get a tour of the first-ever-in-the-world Apple Briefing Room!   It’s tucked away on an upper floor in the new Apple location in Uptown.   Basically,  it’s an executive conference room loaded with Apple gear.  Fronting Hennepin Avenue, off the Briefing Room are two patios, with table and chairs for 4, plus a grass area.  (Hmm, real grass?  Forever grass?  Shareology didn’t ask…)  These patios surround a skylight that floods the main sales area below with light.

The Briefing Room includes a conference table seating 16, and every Apple product imaginable:  iPhones, iPads, big screen….. So:  got a business problem you want to solve?  Come in to the Apple folks, bring your staff, and have Apple help you and your business.   For information call the Uptown Apple store at (952) 229-1463, or email them at

Informed sources tell Shareology that one of the new tenants slated for Mall of America’s south corridor this fall is …… Microsoft!   Watch the GapKids space for one of the first retail stores opened by the Washington company; plan on watching a lot of Xboxes go out the door.  Shaping up to be even more fun is the Guru versus Genius Bar battle between Microsoft and their across-the-hall neighbor, Apple…    Let the Games begin!

Update from Social Media Breakfast – Retail: Izzy’s Secret Revealed! June 6, 2010

Remember Social Media Breakfast – Minneapolis – St. Paul – Retail when Jeff Sommers of Izzy’s Ice Cream had a big revelation coming?  One that he could not reveal that morning at Mall of America?   Well, Shareology went to 2034 Marshall Avenue in St. Paul for a tweet-up this weekend, and saw the secret revealed!

It actually starts on YOUR computer!

By going to their website (listed below), then clicking on Izzy’s Flavor Up, you can check out what flavors are available today in the store for your taste buds!  By using RFID technology, a boatload of persistence, and the help of Tunheim Partners and Sierra Bravo, Izzy’s helps you find your favorite flavor available today in the store.  32 flavors are always on hand; a total of 90 are in rotation.  However, in Izzy’s history, 100’s of flavors have danced through the Marshall Avenue store.

So check out Izzy’s current inventory via web and head on over to the store:

Choices, Choices, Choices!

Social Media Savvy Izzy's!

Inside or outside, Izzy's creates memories

Kinda makes you wonder what else RFID technology could be used for in retail….

Jeff and Lara opened Izzy’s on July 29, 2000; as you can see by the date, you’ve got a great 10 year celebration to add to your calendar.  So get yourself over to Izzy’s at 2034 Marshall Avenue in St. Paul and start online!
