Shareology

Happy 3rd Birthday, Shareology!!! July 24, 2012

Shareology began on July 26, 2009:  Happy Birthday!!!

What I am most proud of is the sheer diversity of subject matter. Ok, Shareology has tipped heavily towards retail brands. However, you will find posts on social media, marketing and networking sprinkled throughout Shareology. This works out pretty great, in that I hesitated to start a blog when my interests are so very diverse. One of the surprises has been that posts I have considered to be sort of simplistic have resonated with readers. Luckily they can see the wisdom buried in the shallowness that is Shareology. (Hmm…..that might be a new post: Embrace your Shallowness….not in the Kim K shallowness but in the KLR shallowness…like I’ve never met a British mystery I didn’t love….or mysteries about Venice or Paris….or south Florida….)

So: three things I’m proud of:

Readers come back; posts draw new readers, sort of like an annuity. When I am feeling guilty that I have not continued posting twice a week, and can barely manage once a month, I marvel at the continued attraction of years old posts. The St. Paul picture of Peppermint Patty in Rice Park kicking a football remains popular; who knew I’d be walking through that park every morning on the way to work?

I had a few retail scoops in my time…. I beat the Strib by a day announcing the arrival of Louis Vuitton in Galleria. (They were waiting for a quote from the NY office; not Shareology. I saw the signs in Galleria in the midst of a horrific downturn in retail and knew this was huge news.) Thanks to some superb sources, I scooped everyone by months in announcing Microsoft was opening a store in Mall of America, across from Apple.

My photography is a surprise…. One of the bases for Shareology was the thought that a boatload of words tossed on a blog is innately pretty boring. Thus my point-and-shoot Canon became a fixture of Shareology. A definite highlight was when I was contacted by the general contractor of the Louis Vuitton store, asking if he could use a Shareology photo on his website, to advertise his firm’s abilities. He offered a photo credit. I am still glowing from that.

So, where will Shareology go? Beats me. I’ve been converted to a content calendar at work; it’s necessary to manage the posts of 20 some writers. But Shareology? Shareology will continue to report the world as she sees it and experiences it. But not before stopping to thank all those readers who came to read, to laugh, to argue, to comment, and to return. Without you…..Shareology would be a big old room full of echoes.

One final point:  Shareology recently went and clicked on those very first seven posts (right hand column, waaaaay at the bottom.) Talk about an out-of-body experience.  It really does feel like they were written by someone else.  While Shareology tries to come back together as one, click on July, 2009:  that Target branding post still holds up, as does the one on Bachmans’ marketing.  Enjoy!

Happy 3rd Birthday!!!

Who’s winning the Microsoft-Apple battle at Mall of America December 15, 2010

The Los Angeles Times recently published (November 26, 2010) an article on the 7 Microsoft stores versus the 300 Apple stores.   In a trip to the Mission Viejo mall, they noted the following:

“Over a half-hour period, 19 people walked out of the mall’s Apple Store carrying purchases in one of the company’s signature white bags. By comparison, just three walked out of the nearby Microsoft Store with merchandise.

The survey may not have been scientific, but it reflects what analysts say is the challenge Microsoft Corp. faces in taking on Apple Inc. in America’s shopping centers.”

Shareology did a spot check December 14 at the Mall of America South location of the newly opened Microsoft store, directly across the hall from Apple, and found pretty much the same result.  During the opening days of the Microsoft store, a boatload of excitement was generated.  Shareology even got caught in public dancing to Poker Face on Kinect, the product that Microsoft seems to be pushing the most.

However, now that the dust is settling, it looks like Apple has about 5 times more customers than Microsoft.  A peek at Mall of America South, first the Apple store:

Shareology had to bob and weave between customers to make it through the Apple store.

Alas, the same could not be said for Microsoft:

Shareology kinda hopes Microsoft succeeds at MOA; it’s a much better story when they are both full of customers and competing.   The sales figures for both thus create a Win-Win-Win for Microsoft, Apple and Mall of America.  Come on, go out and buy a Kinect and dance your holiday away!!

Blame in on Microsoft!!  Not only did they open Microsoft Store #6 in Mall of America on Saturday  — but a quick trip around the mall resulted in a discovery in Nickelodeon Universe:  they have a pop up Kinect Store there!   Although to be fair, it looks more like another Nick Universe attraction, and small it ain’t.

What Shareology knows about gaming fits in the proverbial teacup…but what might have started out as a game is migrating to a do-it-in-your living room, incredibly fun way to exercise for a mere $300 or so….(Kinect is part of the XBox 360…)

Well that’s it from Nickelodeon Universe….if you wanna continue to boogie, y’all gotta get to 162 South Avenue, Mall of America and pick up one of these:

Shareology is out the door:  P P P P P P Poker Face!!!!!

Microsoft Store #6 opens at Mall of America!! November 7, 2010

DECEMBER 13 UPDATE:

Microsoft’s first five stores are at Scottsdale, Arizona, Mission Viejo and San Diego, California, Lone Tree, Colorado and Oakbrook, Illinois.  Store #7 is now open in Bellevue, Washington.

The games have begun!!  On November 6, 2010, Microsoft opened its 6th store in Bloomington, MN at Mall of America.   Store opening was announced for 9 am; by Shareology’s reckoning, the actual doors opened at 9:49 am.  Below is a highly edited vision of Saturday morning:

Check out the guy in line in the black tee-shirt......

yep, that would be an Apple on that tee....

the next door neighbor at MOA? yep, again: Apple....

Shareology's been waiting for this day since June 23...

when she broke news of the new neighbors-to-be in Mall of America 1st floor South…

1st guests in line: guaranteed a spot at Kelly Clarkson!

getting those tickets to an in store autograph signing!

Shareology hung out on the 2nd floor overlooking the Microsoft 1st floor store because the view on 1st floor was a tad obscured.  Guess who else was hangin’ on 2nd?   Besides other photog types, Shareology was joined by three imports from Redmond, Washington!

joined by CIO for Microsoft Stores ....

big checks going to local charities....

the red ribbon is cut, the store is revealed....

Hey, besides product, there are MS staffers, ready to help!!!

OKay, only 4 more pics to go (imagine lots of M-I-C-R-O-S-O-F-T yelling from the cheerleaders in Microsoft colors, and the cheerleaders in white go-go boots, gobs of lines winding around 1st South, the sight of Julio Ojeda-Zapata taking pics for the Pioneer Press, and my fav:  the shark from Underwater World navigating the edge of the crowd.   It was that kinda morning.)

the first gift bags exit the store...

nothing like playing games in front of a biiiiig camera....

Shareology was found out in Nickelodeon Universe, dancing to Poker Face in a pop-up store featuring Kinect for XBox 360…..more on that (yes, and photos..) later this week…. (Smart move, opening a pop-up store in Nickelodeon Universe!!)

Before you head to 162 South Avenue at Mall of America to visit Microsoft and their neighbor across the hall, Apple — let’s take one more look at some folks who had a real great morning:

Shareology first broke news on June 20 that Microsoft is opening in the Mall of America, directly across from Apple.   Three and a half months later:   (October 7) the Star Tribune published this same news, along with the opening date of November 6.  To see photos of the build out and read the stories Shareology has published on this topic in the last few months, put Microsoft in the search box to the right.  Enjoy!

Mall of America: Microsoft and More! Fall, 2010 September 14, 2010

Shareology took an educational detour past one of the mobile phone stores this lovely September day at Mall of America.  Turns out there is much more than mobile phones going on at MOA, including the white elephant turning logoland next to Legoland:

Yep, they must be serious: logos have emerged!!

The Microsoft build space on 1st floor South went from the past bright acres of white to the logoland you see above.  More views of the vast retail space about to open this fall (dare we guess October?).

view of Microsoft build towards Nickelodeon Universe

Speaking of Legoland, Microsoft’s neighbor looks like it too is under construction.  In fact, if my premed nephew was still into his lego collection, he could build the entire new store out of legos!!

now that's one empty LegoLand!!

So what else is new and coming at Mall of America???

LuLuLemon is building!!

A brand new concept, The Art of Shaving, is newly open in that round glassy space in the middle of 1st floor West:  (yep, Andy of Mayberry would feel right at home…)

The Art of Shaving

Only 2 more items  but they are hot, hot, hot!!

1.  Hugo Boss is open!!

even Shareology wants to shop at Hugo Boss!!

For this final item, alas Shareology was at MOA about seven hours too early…..but for the rest of you:   at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 14 was:  (alas, Shareology couldn’t make it work!!!)

That’s all Folks!!  Happy fall from Shareology!!
