Shareology checks in at Verizon’s first Destination Store! November 20, 2013

Shareology got a sneak peek at the new Verizon Destination Store at the Mall of America, near the old Bloomies on 2nd floor South. Check out the great store front! 9,715 square feet makes it 7 times as big as the previous Verizon MOA store! This new Destination Store format is the very first; next one opens in Chicago in 2014.

Marni Walden, EVP and COO of Verizon Wireless welcomed us to the store, the first ever of this new format. Check out the shoes Dorothy would have worn if she worked for Verizon!

One of the things I had complained about in the old store format was that there was nowhere to sit down; that problem has been beautifully solved!

I made a point to thank Sarah Christy, Solution Manager, for the great new seating and well-designed store. Sarah was there when I bought my Droid Razr Maxx, when I strongly noted that there was no seating in the previous store. I’m guessing the average purchase takes 30 minutes while they set up your phone; nice to now have a place to sit for a bit.

Overall, I’d say this new store fits in between Apple and Microsoft; I think you’ll find a much broader selection at Verizon, though. The store has a grand opening celebration this evening, November 20, 7 – 9:30 pm, with the first full day November 21! Check it out at Mall of America, S280!

Indoor Maps: Google and Mall of America partner for the next step in maps: into the indoors!! November 29, 2011

Shareology was thrilled when she found  out about the latest wrinkle in Google Maps!!  Just in time for the holiday season, Google debuts maps for the indoors!  Since we are into the holiday season, what better partner for Google than Mall of America!  For now the indoors is for the Android family of smart phones; iPhones will follow in 2012.

A quick download of Google Maps 6.0 from market, and Shareology was off to the Mall of America to test this out!

One of the exciting things is that all 4 floors at Mall of America are available on Indoor maps! Just click on 1, 2, 3 or 4 off to the right, and you shift easily from floor to floor.

Before Indoor:                                       After Indoor:

A couple of tips:  once you get the map, it can zoom in for more detail.  Having issues?  Close and reload; it gets better the more you work with it.

Either a little blue dot or a blue arrow will tell you where you are on the map.

First Google Maps Indoors partners include:

  • Mall of America, IKEA, The Home Depot, select Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, Daimaru, Takashimaya and Mitsukoshi locations and more.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O’Hare (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Narita International (NRT), among others.
  • JR and Tokyu Corporation

Boss vs. Hugo Boss at MOA: Visual Pun or Great Ad Placement???? October 21, 2011

Shareology was stopped in her tracks this week during her travels through Mall of America.  To the immediate left hand of Hugo Boss was an ad for…………….Boss!  the TV show.  Wouldn’t you just love to be privy to those conversations behind the scenes?  Does MOA tell Hugo Boss what is about to go up next to their store?   Are these ads all over the Mall and Shareology just never noticed?  Ah, so many questions….your thoughts??

Who’s winning the Microsoft-Apple battle at Mall of America December 15, 2010

The Los Angeles Times recently published (November 26, 2010) an article on the 7 Microsoft stores versus the 300 Apple stores.   In a trip to the Mission Viejo mall, they noted the following:

“Over a half-hour period, 19 people walked out of the mall’s Apple Store carrying purchases in one of the company’s signature white bags. By comparison, just three walked out of the nearby Microsoft Store with merchandise.

The survey may not have been scientific, but it reflects what analysts say is the challenge Microsoft Corp. faces in taking on Apple Inc. in America’s shopping centers.”

Shareology did a spot check December 14 at the Mall of America South location of the newly opened Microsoft store, directly across the hall from Apple, and found pretty much the same result.  During the opening days of the Microsoft store, a boatload of excitement was generated.  Shareology even got caught in public dancing to Poker Face on Kinect, the product that Microsoft seems to be pushing the most.

However, now that the dust is settling, it looks like Apple has about 5 times more customers than Microsoft.  A peek at Mall of America South, first the Apple store:

Shareology had to bob and weave between customers to make it through the Apple store.

Alas, the same could not be said for Microsoft:

Shareology kinda hopes Microsoft succeeds at MOA; it’s a much better story when they are both full of customers and competing.   The sales figures for both thus create a Win-Win-Win for Microsoft, Apple and Mall of America.  Come on, go out and buy a Kinect and dance your holiday away!!

Legoland reopens at Mall of America!

One of the last surprises to debut on Mall of America South is Legoland!  A rework of the Lego store, the black clothes of mystery are no more; Shareology really wishes she had some more 6-year-old boys in her family!

What particularly amazes Shareology about this redo is the continued use of the entire space, which in this case is 3 stories high!  Where else, but perhaps in Times Square, can a retailer use this much space on the outside of the store to tell their story?  3D Merchandising indeed!

this knight and his horse are magical!

this big blue dude dominates!!

There’s also a helicopter that looks incredibly real…..all just in time for holiday shopping!
